The Why – Introducing Seafood Society Australia

Seafood Society Australia was born out of necessity.
It began with the Wild Caught Fishers Coalition — a grassroots movement of commercial fishers in New South Wales who had spent decades fighting for fair, sustainable access to the oceans they harvest. These hardworking Australians weren’t just catching seafood — they were feeding communities, stewarding marine environments, and upholding generations of local knowledge.
But despite their efforts, the tide kept turning against them.
From state to state, closures swept through. Fisheries were shut, species banned, and working waters locked up — all without proper consultation, scientific justification, or consideration for the people who rely on local seafood. Commercial fishers, despite being tightly regulated and sustainably managed, were silenced by louder, better-funded lobbies.
And the most important stakeholder of all — you, the Australian seafood consumer — had no seat at the table.
That ends now.
Seafood Society Australia is the first grassroots organisation formed to represent you — the person who wants affordable, traceable, Australian-caught seafood on their plate. We are your voice to parliament. We exist to defend your right to eat what’s caught from your own waters — and not be forced to rely on cheap, imported substitutes.
If we don’t act, that right will disappear quietly, permanently, and without your consent.
Your seafood. Your choice. Your voice.

The What – Why Your Voice Matters
Protect Your Right to Eat Local Seafood
Australians are losing access to their own seafood — and most don’t even know it’s happening.
Bit by bit, working fisheries have been shut down:
👉 Net-free zones
👉 Port and estuary closures
👉 Recreational-only fishing havens
👉 Species bans without evidence of overfishing
👉 Marine parks expanding without boundaries
Each decision might sound small on its own — but together, they form a pattern: a system that quietly removes your right to choose Australian seafood.
And here’s what they’re not telling you:
-
Commercial fisheries in Australia are already among the most sustainable and tightly regulated in the world.
-
Thousands of licences have been retired.
-
Quotas are strictly enforced.
-
Boats are tracked in real-time.
-
Gear, seasons, and catch sizes are all controlled by law.
So if sustainability was the goal — why are the closures still happening?
The truth is, this isn’t about protecting fish. It’s about politics. It’s about shifting access away from working people and toward more powerful interests — while leaving everyday Australians with no say and fewer choices.
This is your food system. Your right to choose fresh, local, responsibly caught seafood.
Don’t let it be taken from you by stealth.
Stand with the commercial fishing families who supply your table.
Push back against the policies that sacrifice sustainability for spectacle.
Once the fisheries are gone, they don’t come back.
And neither does your freedom to eat what’s caught off your own coast.
